What is Modern LASIK?

With Modern LASIK (Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis), ophthalmologists use a femtosecond laser to open a corneal flap that provides access to change the shape of the cornea. It’s an all-laser technique for vision correction. The laser technology is more precise than a mechanical blade, so it can be highly customizable to the unique eyes of every patient.

Is LASIK Right For Me?

You may be a good candidate for LASIK if you answer "Yes" to any of these questions.

  • Are you having trouble seeing far away?
  • Do you have difficulty reading or seeing well at night?
  • Are you experiencing depth perception issues?
  • Are you nearsighted, farsighted, or do you have an astigmatism?

What's It Like To Have LASIK

Calendar icon

Schedule A Consultation

A Katzen Eye Group doctor will meet with you to discuss your vision changes and help you understand the options available. The consultation and the diagnostic testing are free, and neither obligate you to any future service. The meeting simply helps us determine whether you are a candidate for LASIK. If you are, you will have an opportunity to schedule your procedure at this appointment.

Arrive At The Katzen Office For LASIK

Our staff will greet you and introduce you to the ophthalmologist who will perform your procedure. There is one last diagnostic exam before the lasers are set with your exact prescription. It takes about 15-20 minutes in our laser suite.

Travel Home For Recovery

You’ll need to have a friend or family member help you get home after the surgery. The improved vision happens immediately, but we advise patients not to read, drive, or use a computer for the remainder of the day. After a good night of sleep, you should be ready to return to work the following day.

Come Back The Next Day For A Post-Op Checkup

It is important that you meet with a Katzen eye doctor the day after your LASIK to confirm that your eyes are healthy. If so, the doctor will clear you for normal activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LASIK safe?

LASIK is usually safer than wearing contact lenses. Learn more here.

How long does the initial consultation take?

Allow 90 minutes for the consultation and diagnostic procedures.

How do I know if I’m a candidate for LASIK?

You need to schedule a consultation to determine whether or not you’re a candidate for LASIK. The consultation is free, takes about 90 minutes, and involves dilating your eyes to give doctors the most accurate results. If you wear soft contacts, we ask that you not wear them for at least three days prior to the consultation.

Is the surgery done at all of your locations?

The surgery is only done at our Lutherville location.

How long will my LASIK results last?

More often than not, LASIK is a permanent procedure. In some instances, however, patients will need to have an enhancement—this is where the surgeon has to repeat the procedure to obtain satisfactory results. Due to the expertise and careful planning of our surgeons and staff, we have an extremely low enhancement rate of 2-3%.

Will my insurance cover LASIK?

No. LASIK is considered an elective procedure, so neither vision nor medical insurance companies will cover LASIK.

Do you offer any type of financing?

We offer 12-, 18-, and 24-month financing plans with no interest through Care Credit. More information, as well as an application, can be found here.

Is LASIK painful?

We use drops to numb the eye. Most patients report no pain during the procedure. Some do, however, report experiencing the sensation of pressure when we create the flap.

How long before I can return to work/school/other activities?

Most patients resume normal activities within a day of having LASIK surgery. We do recommend not returning to work the day of your surgery, however, many of our patients do successfully return to work the day after their procedure. We typically recommend refraining from strenuous exercise and outdoor sports for 7 days following your surgery.  Patients should not participate in swimming for two weeks. Specific concerns can be discussed with your doctor.
