February: Low Vision Awareness Month
As the nation’s youngest Baby Boomers reach their 50’s (and the oldest Boomers have started on Medicare), Katzen Eye Group would like to acknowledge Low Vision Awareness Month to help raise awareness for such conditions as Cataracts, Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma and Diabetic Retinopathy. Each of these conditions alone can cause visual devastation to an individual. These conditions as a group (and many others) can cause visual devastation to our society as a whole.
A thorough annual eye exam is able to pick up the early warning signs of many of these conditions, often years before they become visually significant to the patient. Cataract surgery has revolutionized our eyesight after age 60 and is safer than ever, and by using advanced technology like Intraocular Lenses, has increased spectacle independence to unprecedented levels. Early treatment of Macular Degeneration is now commonplace, but it has to be detected first, before its devastating effects are realized. Early detection of Glaucoma and Diabetic Eye Disease also allow for aggressive early treatment that often helps with the deterioration of vision previously seen with these diseases.
If you have questions about how you can prevent some of the conditions above, please let us know by submitting a contact form or calling to talk to one of our team members.
