Modern LASIK
A lot has changed in eye surgery over the years we’ve been in practice.
LASIK itself has changed in leaps and bounds since the 90s.
Advances such as radar tracking of the eye, femtosecond technology to create the corneal flap, the registry of data to track postoperative outcomes (Surgivision Datalink Alcon Edition) all exist today and were nowhere near available when LASIK was first approved by the FDA in the 90s.
One of the most exciting advancements has been the technology that allows surgeons to use a femtosecond laser, rather than a metal blade, to create the thin corneal flap that grants access to the cornea during LASIK. This all-laser, bladeless LASIK – which we call “Modern LASIK” – is safer and more accurate. We have found that it gives many patients great peace of mind to know this action will be performed by a programmed laser rather than a metal blade.
Once the corneal flap is created, another laser that has been programmed to remove tissue from the cornea in order to correct a patient’s refractive errors – nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism – does its work. The cornea is located at the front of the eye, so if you’re worried about the invasiveness of the procedure, rest assured that it is truly minimal. Once this has been done, the flap is put back in place, and the healing process begins.
The entire surgery takes no longer than 15-20 minutes, and patients’ vision improves almost instantly. While rest and avoidance of driving, reading, and other activities that can be strenuous to eyes are encouraged for the rest of the day of surgery, most patients are back to their regular lives the next day.
Incredible shifts and advancements in technology have transformed LASIK into the procedure it is today. It’s safe, accurate, and followed by a swift recovery.
While the technology has changed, what hasn’t changed is our commitment to giving people a better vision and a life without glasses. Every procedure – every patient – is unique, and the technology we have in our practice allows our doctors to perform laser vision correction with the utmost confidence and precision.
